Leeds United losing their heads over Ousmane Diomande amid £43m bid as Sporting CP move goalposts

Leeds United are prepared to make history this summer, having readied a £43million offer for Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande that would represent the biggest transfer fee ever paid by the club.

Daniel Farke’s side finished 14th in their first Premier League season back in the top flight – a respectable survival effort, but one that highlighted the need for significant defensive reinforcement if the Whites are to push on and establish themselves as a mid-table force next campaign.

There are also doubts over Pascal Struijk’s future in West Yorkshire, as he is set to be one of the biggest talking points at the club this window.

With that in mind, Leeds United are scouring the market for options, and the identity of their primary defensive target is an ambitious one. The financial commitment being discussed underlines just how seriously the 49ers Enterprises ownership is taking the challenge of competing at the highest level.

It is a bold statement of intent from a club that has only recently returned to the Premier League, and one that Simon Jordan would no doubt have plenty to say about.

Leeds United ready history-making bid as Sporting dig in

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Leeds United have clearly identified Diomande as their top defensive target and are willing to submit an initial offer of £34.5m.

After add-ons, the transfer fee could rise to £43m (€50m), and would comfortably surpass the Elland Road outfit’s previous record signing – the £35.5m paid for Georginio Rutter in 2022, and signals an ambition that goes beyond mere survival.

The Ivory Coast international has spent three and a half seasons at Sporting, earning admirers across Europe’s elite clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace.

Leeds now join that list, as they are said to be losing their heads over signing him, but face a significant obstacle in Sporting’s resolve to keep him.

Diomande renewed his contract in January until 2030 and has a £69m release clause, with Sporting making clear they will resist pressure to sell the 22-year-old.

This is despite previous reports claiming that the Primeira Liga giants would sit at the negotiation table if their required threshold of £43m (€50m) is met.

No formal offer has yet arrived at the Lisbon-based club, but the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Diomande represents the Ivory Coast, could intensify interest considerably in the coming weeks.

At £30m, Igor Paixao is still worth every penny 💵

What it means for Leeds

Landing Diomande would be a genuine statement signing, but Sporting hold all the cards, considering he is tied to them until 2030 and has a £69m release clause.

Leeds United’s reported £43m package falls well short of that sum, meaning Sporting can afford to wait.

However, Farke and Co. will be frustrated by the fact that the Portuguese heavyweights appear to have moved the goalposts after initially being willing to negotiate a sale for £43m.
