Leeds United planning to break transfer record with £43m Sporting Lisbon star

Leeds United spending around £43m on Ousmane Diomande would be a huge call, but it would not be reckless. It would see Daniel Farke sign a centre-back with one elite trait Leeds still lack.

According to African site 225Foot, Leeds are pushing to sign Diomande from Sporting CP, with the Ivorian defender valued at around €50m. That works out at £43m, which would be a transfer record for Leeds.

At £30m, Igor Paixao is still worth every penny 💵

Leeds’ current record signing is Georginio Rutter, when Leeds paid Hoffenheim a fee of £35.5m in January 2023. Diomande would not just edge past that figure, he would comfortably eclipse it.

That is why this would be a serious statement. Leeds are not looking at a squad filler, they are looking at a defender who has already been linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Diomande has the pace profile Leeds do not currently possess

The standout part of Diomande’s profile is speed. UEFA have clocked him at 33.62 km/h in the Champions League this season, which is an outstanding number for a centre-back of his size.

That is the key difference between him and Leeds’ current options. Joe Rodon is mobile and reads danger well, Jaka Bijol is a powerful penalty-box defender. Pascal Struijk is comfortable playing from the back.

Diomande brings something else. He has the recovery pace to defend big spaces behind the back line, which would allow Leeds to play higher and more aggressively without leaving themselves as exposed.

Sporting’s valuation reflects a rare modern centre-back

Sporting are entitled to demand a premium because Diomande is not being priced on potential alone. He is 22, already an Ivory Coast international, and valued at €42m by Transfermarkt.

His Champions League numbers also support the valuation. Across the competition this season, Diomande has recorded 92 per cent passing accuracy, 23 ball recoveries and nine appearances.

Those figures matter because they show he is not just a runner. He can defend space, recover possession and use the ball securely in elite European matches.

Leeds’ defensive planning makes this move even more important

Leeds already have good centre-backs, but their long-term picture is not completely settled. Struijk is wanted by Farke, but his contract runs until 2027 and Premier League interest has created uncertainty.

Leeds have also had a decision to make on depth, with Sebastiaan Bornauw attracting interest from Koln. That makes Diomande look less like a luxury and more like a chance to future-proof the back line.

A £43m fee would be enormous by Leeds standards, but this is exactly the type of player worth stretching for. If Leeds can beat bigger Premier League clubs to Diomande, it would be a genuine coup.
