Leeds United are closing in on Sporting Lisbon midfielder Hidemasa Morita after a long-term pursuit. Reports in Portugal are claiming a deal is, ‘in principle, already decided’.
Leeds have tracked 30-year-old Japan midfielder Morita for over a year, with interest first emerging last summer before being revived again later in the season.
The club were again linked in March, with Leeds eyeing Morita’s situation at Sporting. The Japan star was offered new terms to remain at Sporting last summer, but he chose to reject it in search of a new home.

Not had a chance.
Contract situation has opened the door for Leeds
Morita’s current deal is due to expire in June, making him an increasingly attractive option as a free transfer. A player known for his incredible work rate, constant availability and reliability, and experience.
The former Santa Clara and Kawasaki Frontale star has made no secret of his desire to test himself in England, with the Premier League his preferred destination.

That outcome now appears close. Portuguese outlet A Bola have described his destination as ‘already decided in principle as the end of his contract approaches. Leeds are named as the club signing him.
Indeed, the report suggests that Morita was waiting for Leeds to confirm their Premier League status before agreeing a move to Elland Road. With Daniel Farke’s side on 43 points, Morita is happy to sign.
The move indicates, as per the report, a return to possession football under Farke. Morita is renowned for his ability to keep the ball, with Morita completing 777 of 892 passes in Portugal this term, around 87%.
Tanaka’s comments underline Morita’s level
Morita’s quality has also been highlighted by international teammate Ao Tanaka, who has openly praised his level. Tanaka and Morita have shared the pitch for both club and country, teammates at Frontale.

On a free, Morita would be a stunning signing.
Tanaka recently said Morita is playing to a higher level than he had been: “Personally, I have many issues to work on. When I watch players like Morita and Endo, I feel that there is still a lot I need to do and a lot of room to grow. I need to keep trying.”
Leeds’ move now reflects timing as much as intent, with a long-standing target becoming available at the exact moment his contract allows a clean exit. Morita’s potential arrival increases midfield competition.
