Leeds United have seemingly been battling Sheffield United for endless centre-back targets this month.
Both clubs were reportedly involved in a ‘straight shootout’ for Everton’s Ben Godfrey, though it is now looking likely he will be staying at Goodison Park after fighting back into Sean Dyche’s plans.
The Yorkshire neighbours also saw loan offers knocked back by Nottingham Forest for Joe Worrall last night, while Mason Holgate and Harry Souttar have both also been linked today.
However, it would appear Sheffield United are now set to win the race for one of them with Sky Sports reporting Holgate is set to have his loan terminated at Southampton ahead of a medical today.
Links between Holgate and Leeds have not been overly strong, but what it could mean is that Daniel Farke’s side now have a free passage to sign Souttar.
Sheffield United’s Holgate move is good for Leeds
Sheffield United had been confident of securing a deal for Souttar today despite his involvement away at the Asia Cup with Australia.
However, that confidence quickly evaporated after Souttar told his agents to stall on a move to Bramall Lane after learning of interest from Leeds.
And according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, Souttar would actually be interested in a move to Leeds, though it remains to be seen what Leicester City’s stance is.
Leeds are only believed to have launched initial enquiries so far, and an obligation-to-buy will need to be included in the deal to get Leicester talking.
However, Sheffield United’s imminent signing of Holgate is one less obstacle needed to be overcome, in order to sign him.
