For a while, Sheffield United and Leeds United looked like the two main title candidates in the Championship. But the race for automatic promotion is now wide open with just three points separating the top four.
As things stand, just four points separate Leeds United in 1st place of the Championship table with Sunderland in 4th. And on Friday we’ll see some movement in the top four with 2nd place Burnley hosting Sunderland at Turf Moor.
Leeds United fans really want to see Daniel Farke and co get to work in this January transfer window. There’s no new signings through the doors at Elland Road so far, yet the likes of Sunderland, Burnley, and Sheffield United appear to be hard at work.
All three are linked with Tom Cannon. The Leicester City striker could leave in a £13million deal in this January transfer window with Sheffield United and Sunderland looking like the two favourites right now.
Whilst it’d be a blow for a promotion rival to sign a prolific striker like Cannon, it does leave the door open for Leeds to snatch a Sheffield United transfer target in the meantime.
Leeds United have to make Andrew Omobamidele move now
Andrew Omobamidele is well out of favour at Nottingham Forest and linked with a move away in January. Leeds United have been in talks with Omobamidele, who played under Farke at Norwich City previously. Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United are also linked.
But The Star suggest that the Blades have their sights set on other transfer priorities right now; i.e. a deal for Cannon and other attacking targets. That could leave Leeds in the clear to sign Omobamidele who’d surely relish the chance to simply play football again, especially so under a familiar name in Farke.
On Tuesday, the 22-year-old Omobamidele was once again left out of Nottingham Forest’s matchday squad in the Premier League. He’s not even been on the bench since October 2024.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s damning Andrew Omobamidele hint
Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo is clearly not a fan of Omobamidele, despite the Reds spending £11million to sign him from Norwich City in 2023.
Speaking after his side’s FA Cup game against Luton Town earlier in the month, Santo gave a damning assessment of the players who didn’t feature in the 2-0 win over the Hatters.
He said: “If I didn’t trust them I would not start them. We made a lot of changes but the depth of the squad is there. We still have to improve, but it is good to have all of them. Only Ibrahim Sangare is not with us. Other than that, we have all of them healthy. It is good because it is going to be very tough.”
Although not directly naming Omobamidele, it’s clear that the centre-back is someone who Santo doesn’t trust. But Farke knows him and surely trusts him too. With centre-back options still very light, Omobamidele would be a great signing for the remainder of the season.
