Bizarre turn of events could see Leeds United sign £17.5m Marseille target if they miss out on Igor Paixao

Igor Paixao to Leeds United has really amped up in the last week or so, with reports that the Whites are plotting to sign the Feyenoord man in a big money move this summer.

Igor Paixao impressed in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord last season. The Brazilian winger scored 16 goals and assisted 10 more in 34 Eredivisie games for Robin van Persie’s side and now looks set to secure himself a big money move this summer.

Right now, Leeds United and Marseille are in a battle to sign Paixao. The latest on the situation is somewhat conflicting, though. Reports have stated that Marseille are about to sign Paixao in a deal worth €35million, whilst separate reports have claimed that Leeds have offered in excess of £26million for Paixao.

What to make of the situation is unclear at this stage, though it seems like Paixao is definitely about to secure a move away from Feyenoord, with Daniel Farke’s Leeds or Marseille looking like his likeliest destination.

Leeds United could pick between Igor Paixao and Timothy Weah

To add another confusing element to the saga, Italian journalist Guillaume Pacini is now reporting that Leeds United transfer target Timothy Weah is an active transfer target for Marseille. A winger as well, Weah has been linked with Leeds United and Everton this summer and looks bound to leave Juventus, after scoring five and assisting twice in 30 games in Serie A last season.

Pacini writes that Marseille ‘remains clearly in the lead’ to sign the 25-year-old this summer, adding that Premier League clubs are interested in the player. However, Marseille are only offering €15million whilst Juventus want €20million (£17.5million) for the USMNT player.

Depending on where Paixao ends up this summer, Weah could also end up at one of Marseille or Leeds United.

Both players can play on the right and could potentially replace Manor Solomon who looks set to stay at Spurs for the time being.

And on the surface, Paixao certainly seems the best bet: his goals tally completely dwarfs that of Weah’s last season, and his assists too, though Paixao could cost as much as twice the price.

Leeds United have a £150million transfer budget for this summer, though Farke may be wanting to save some for January, or sign several more players yet this summer.

And going off the stats alone, Paixao certainly seems to be the better player. Though Weah was playing a bit part role for Juve last time round, and arguably in a more competitive division than the Eredivisie.

Both seem like solid signings, though many Leeds fans may prefer Paixao at this moment in time.
