What Steve Cooper said about Ethan Ampadu is very interesting, after Leeds nearly hired him

Steve Cooper was eyed by Leeds United in the summer and has now been sacked by Nottingham Forest – and his comments on Elland Road favourite Ethan Ampadu back in 2019 are interesting.

Ampadu, 23, joined Leeds in the summer as Daniel Farke’s very first addition as manager of the Whites. He has since played every single minute this season, all 24 games in league and cup for Leeds this term.

He is on the right path to clocking up 50 in one season, especially if Leeds go and finish in the play-offs come May. Ampadu has been pivotal to our season so far. His form might have dipped, but still reliable.

Reports have now emerged that Cooper – who has been sacked by Forest and may be replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo – was a consideration for Leeds in the summer. But, the Whites went with Farke, instead.

Back in 2019, Swansea were linked with a move for Ampadu. That season, he went on loan to Leipzig. But prior to that loan to Germany, Cooper spoke to Wales Online about a potential move for Ampadu.

“Ethan’s a really good player. I read today that there might be a loan deal going on. I can’t say we’ve had conversations with Chelsea but if he would be available then he’d be a very good player,” Cooper said.

Had Leeds hired Cooper then, it might have been that the former Swansea and Forest gaffer could have also gone into the market to lure Ampadu to Elland Road. Farke, instead, lured the versatile ace here.

What a signing he has turned out to be. If for some reason down the line, Farke ends up leaving Leeds – then perhaps Cooper could come in and such a move may benefit Ampadu, given Cooper is an admirer.
