‘More precise’… Daniel Farke says 23-year-old Leeds United man’s passing could really improve

Daniel Farke admitted on Friday that Leeds United midfielder Ethan Ampadu’s form in recent weeks has dipped, and says his forward passing could be better – but heaped huge praise on Ampadu, too.

Ampadu, 23, is one of an exclusive club of Championship players to have played every single minute in England’s second tier this season. The only other player to do that for Leeds this season, is Illan Meslier.

For an outfield player, and certainly a central midfielder, that is quite the achievement. Not least, given the summer signing has also been playing for Wales. Ampadu made a near-perfect start to life at Leeds.

Since then, he quickly was in the running for Player of the Season so far, but in recent weeks, it is fair to say his form has reduced somewhat. His passing against Sunderland was poor. Often, losing the ball.

But Farke made the point during Friday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube – that even if the former Chelsea man is not at his best, he is still producing a 7/10 display. Which to be fair, is very true.

“Overall a fantastic season, we are very happy [with Ampadu]. Since we signed him, you couldn’t predict it would work out so smoothly. But he is doing exceptionally well, especially in the beginning,” Farke said.

“After game day 6, many top-class performances. Sometimes his forward passing could be a bit more precise, and his timing. But even if he does not have his best day, still gives 7/10. This is what we need.

“He organises everything, wins duels, wins headers, shows leadership, great assist for Georginio. He has the capability to do this. In recent games, he could have shown a little bit better. Solid and reliable.”

Yes, his form against the likes of Swansea, Blackburn and then Sunderland was not what Leeds fans have come to expect from Ampadu. But he, as Farke says, is incredibly reliable. Sturdy, without injury.

He is one of the first names on the team sheet and will continue to be as such. He might need a bit of a rest and taking him out for a game or two over the Christmas break may make sense. He deserves it.

But the chances are, and given the type of personality Ampadu is, you would imagine he would much rather be on the pitch – trying to improve his form without a break. He needs a big display on Saturday.
