Daniel Farke was left ‘fuming’ with Georginio Rutter in the first half of Leeds United’s defeat to Sunderland last night after a failed attempt at a counter-attack.
Rutter did not enjoy his best game last night as he failed to really make the ball stick in attack, with this incident one of several across the 75 minutes on the pitch in which he could have done better.
Joel Piroe received the ball in space inside the Sunderland half and looked to get a quick pass away towards Rutter, which he was unable to control.
In fairness to Rutter, the pass wasn’t the greatest and was actually behind him, but nevertheless, as per the Yorkshire Evening Post, it was an incident that left Farke furious.
That little snippet of attacking play was indicative of Leeds across the entire 90 minutes, as they struggled to break the home side down due to their wastefulness in possession.
Rutter fails to fire, so do Leeds
Rutter has been brilliant this season but that was certainly his worst game in a while last night, and his performance unfortunately had a knock-on effect for the whole team.
The 21-year-old is the centre point in this Leeds attack who allows everyone else around him to flourish, but when he is not on it, everyone else is impacted.
Piroe and Dan James were practically anonymous for the entire game, while Crysencio Summerville was also the least effective he has been for a very long time.
It was apparent pretty quickly that it just was not working for Leeds in the final third, and so Farke should’ve recognised earlier that things needed changing.
Willy Gnonto was again brought off the bench far too late and had he been brought on earlier, perhaps Leeds would’ve obtained the control they needed to at least earn a point.
