What Daniel Farke first thought of Georginio Rutter when he was appointed Leeds United manager

Daniel Farke’s appointment as manager was a key turning point in Georginio Rutter’s Leeds United career.

Rutter arrived in a club-record deal from Hoffenheim in January of 2023 and really struggled in the months immediately after his arrival, making just one Premier League start.

Sam Allardyce even publicly admitted that he was not considering him as a realistic option to start in the four matches he spent in charge, while Rutter was also struggling to learn English.

When returning for pre-season at Thorp Arch, under Rutter’s own admission, his confidence was at rock bottom after such a difficult few months.

However, all be it in a division below, it has been a different story this season with the 22-year-old now a fan favourite due to his performances on the field, and his personality off it.

What Farke first thought of Rutter after Leeds appointment

Rutter was named in the Championship TOTS last month having scored six goals and provided 15 assists over the course of the league season.

There are still plenty of areas of his game that Rutter knows he needs to improve, including when and where the right time is to bring out the best of his dribbling ability.

Only Jack Clarke averaged more dribbles per 90 than Rutter in the Championship, and so when his skills do come off, he is a joy to watch.

This time 12 months ago, Rutter had already been written off by plenty of people but according to Mail+, Farke saw the potential in the young Frenchman very quickly after his appointment as manager.

The report states that staying in the Premier League 12 months ago could’ve made for an uncertain summer for Rutter at Leeds, based on how things had gone.

However, Farke‘s immediate belief in Rutter has allowed him to show his true ability this season, with a career in the top-flight on the cards irrespective of tomorrow’s play-off final with Southampton.

Farke full of praise for Rutter’s season on Friday

Farke was asked in his pre-match press conference on Friday just how he managed to turn around Rutter’s fortunes at Leeds, and pointed to some honest pre-season conversations.

That said, Farke did not want to take too much credit, and instead pointed to the work of Rutter as the reason for his ‘fantastic’ season.

He said: “In the beginning communication was quite important. I listened to what he said. It’s important to let the players speak, get a feeling for what the problem is, also to work with him, to communicate about finding good solutions.

“Sell your plan to the players, it’s not so much about talking then, it’s more about acting and interacting with them. Then comes down to hard work. I would never praise myself for developing a player, I will always praise the players.

“We can work with them, bring them close to the door, but they have to take the step through it, take the good advice on board.

“Georgi had a difficult start to life here, develops in this way, some more challenging spells this season, overall he has played a fantastic season, deserves all the credit, hopefully he can do it in one last game.”
