Georginio Rutter was a difference-maker off the bench for Leeds United last night but it was one of his teammates he was quick to praise after the game.
Leeds eventually ran out 4-1 winners away at Plymouth Argyle after extra-time to progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup, where they will face a trip to either Aston Villa or Chelsea.
After being held to a 1-1 draw in normal time, Rutter and Crysencio Summerville were both on hand to get a goal and assist apiece to help Leeds run away with it. In truth, though, it should’ve been done much earlier.
Willy Gnonto had given Leeds the lead midway through the second half with a brilliantly taken goal from the edge of the area, which was his second in as many matches.
The 20-year-old’s winner at Bristol City last week looks as though it has given him the confidence again, and speaking to BBC Radio Leeds after the match, Rutter is delighted to see him back playing well.
Rutter praises return to form of Gnonto
He said: “I am very happy for him because when a player is without confidence it is hard, I know that. I am very happy for him, last time he did a very good job, scored for the confidence.
“Today again and hopefully he continues in this way because he is a good player and we know the potential. Everybody is happy for Willy.”
Gnonto has had his fair share of struggles this season but has taken the opportunity to come into the side with both hands following Dan James’ injury against Norwich City.
His winner at Bristol City was clearly a huge weight off his shoulders and another goal last night is only going to make him even more confident, which is a danger for the rest of the league.
Daniel Farke says he has always had a lot of faith that Gnonto would eventually come good this season and he needs to continue giving him a run of starts, providing he overcomes his slight knock from last night.
