‘We have to learn’… Daniel Farke explains what left him really frustrated about Leeds United last night

Daniel Farke believes Leeds United need to stop going for the ‘easy solution’ when they are in control of matches.

Farke was speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw at Rotherham United in which Leeds took a sixth minute lead through Crysencio Summerville and failed to capitalise.

Leeds had looked as though they were on the way to a comfortable victory after that goal but seemed to take their foot off the gas, with Farke being asked in his post-match press conference if it was down to complacency.

Farke’s side had 71% of the ball in the first half but the only chances to double their lead came on the counter-attack when Rotherham had committed a few bodies forward.

Aside from that, Leeds were too slow and safe in possession which allowed Rotherham to look comfortable at the back, and ultimately cost them a win.

Leeds need to rid casual play from performances

Farke believes that last night’s game is something Leeds can learn from in the future and is keen for his young squad to expect the worst in matches, rather than best.

He said: “I wouldn’t label it sloppy or complacency. It was just like we went sometimes for the easy solution. We expected always the best instead of expecting the worst. Sometimes you pay the price for this. We’ve got a young squad and we have to learn to be a bit more on it and to bury the game.

“It’s an experienced side Rotherham who have caused many problems for many sides. If you allow them to have a long throw in or free-kick, they can score out of these situations and you have to be on it to use your chances, especially on the road.”

Much of Leeds’ possession last night came between the trio of Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Liam Cooper just passing it between themselves.

When in the team, Pascal Struijk is extremely beneficial to Leeds’ build up play but that can be no excuse for how casual it was last night.

Leeds were almost punished in the previous game against Plymouth Argyle for doing the same thing, but really paid the price last night.
