It is going to be interesting to see who starts up top for Leeds United on Saturday at Cardiff City – and ahead of the clash in Wales, Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe took part in a sprint race in training.
Bamford, 30, has had to watch from the bench for 16 of his 18 appearances this season – but has since started the last two games. Both matches resulting in 3-0 wins over Birmingham City and Peterborough.
Having failed to score since April 2023, Bamford nodded in a header to open the scoring at Elland Road against Birmingham. Then, his stunning volley against Peterborough – a goal that has earned plaudits.
Tony Bellew said it outdid Diego Maradona’s ‘goal of the century’, while Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer heaped praise on the striker. Bamford said Archie Gray predicted he would be up for the Puskas award.
But of course, summer signing Piroe has been excellent at times for Leeds – starting 22 consecutive Championship matches after his arrival. He has scored nine Championship goals in 23 league outings.

Daniel Farke certainly has a decision to make, on who to start. Leeds will certainly be looking to go one better than last time out against Cardiff, during 2-2 on the opening day – without Piroe or Bamford.
Does he stick to what he knows, and bring a fresh Piroe into the side ahead of Bamford. Or, does he continuer with Bamford – who is renowned for being a streaky striker, thriving in spells of good form?
Well, he will have been watching training this week and in a clip uploaded to the club’s LUTV channel (1.05) – Bamford and Piroe go head to head in a race. Bamford comes out on top, laughing as he wins.
