Two years ago he couldn’t get a game in the Championship, now he could become Leeds United’s record signing

As far as redemption stories go, there’s potentially one brewing on the Leeds United transfer front, in a move that could eventually cost £50million.

Daniel Farke is himself a bit of a redemption story. Losing the play-off final with Leeds United last year, then seemingly losing out on automatic promotion this time round, before turning it back and winning the title.

He’s now set to guide Leeds United into the Premier League next season but first he’s guiding the club into this summer’s transfer window, with plenty to do and plenty of money looking likely to be spent at Elland Road.

It’s claimed that Leeds United have a £150million transfer kitty for new signings this summer. And Farke could yet spend much of that £150million on just a few players, with £50million of that potentially set to be spent on just one.

Leeds United’s club record signing remains that of Georginio Rutter, who cost the club £35.5million back in 2023.

What Michael Carrick said about Leeds United transfer target Rodrigo Muniz in 2023

A new name on Leeds United’s transfer radar is Rodrigo Muniz at Fulham. Recent reports have revealed how Muniz is a transfer target for Leeds United this summer, after the Brazilian scored eight goals in 31 Premier League games for Fulham who value Muniz at £50million right now.

That would make him by far Leeds United’s most expensive signing of all time, whilst eating up a huge chunk of Farke’s reported summer transfer budget. It would be a gamble for Leeds United on a player who is good, yes, but arguably not £50million. And it’s only two years ago that Muniz was a back-up player for Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Spending the 2022/23 season on loan at the Riverside, a combination of injury and a lack of form meant that he featured just 17 times in the Championship whilst scoring twice. Speaking about the Brazilian back in February 2023, Carrick discussed how Muniz was down in the pecking order and having to fight for his place.

Carrick told The Northern Echo: “It’s tough when the team is playing well and we have good options. We believe in Rodrigo, he’s a terrific talent and can bring something different to us. I’m sure at some point during the season however soon or maybe towards the end he’ll play a part. I’ve said all along we’ll need everyone at some point in the season. Rodrigo is no different, he’s a big part of what we do.”

Rodrigo Muniz’s Middlesbrough stats vs Fulham stats

Going from Middlesbrough outcast to £50million Premier League striker, all in the space of three seasons, is some going for the 24-year-old. Just four years ago now he was playing his football in Brazil.

Given a run in the side and playing under a more attacking-minded manager in Marco Silva has allowed Muniz to flourish. He might even be one of those players better-sited to the Premier League: Patrick Bamford says he’s better-suited to the Premier League which is more technical and arguably less physical, in terms of the tackles flying in and so on.

Comparing Muniz’s stats during the 2022/23 season at Boro and his 2024/25 season with Fulham makes for incredible reading: he was a literal superb sub for the Cottagers with an astonishing goals-per-minute.

Who knows how he could fare given a season where he’s the no.1 striker in the Premier League. He’d arrive at Elland Road with more Premier League pedigree than the ever-divisive Joel Piroe, but Muniz surely wouldn’t be the only striker arriving.

Still, £50million is a lot to ask for. But in a personal note for Muniz, what a few years it’s been for him.
