Leeds United remain in need of a new left-back this month with just two weeks of the transfer window remaining.
Junior Firpo is showing signs that he could be a huge asset for the rest of the season after another decent showing at Cardiff City. However, he picked up a dead leg in the final few minutes of the match and so the reliability of his fitness remains a concern.
Sam Byram has also been picking up a number of niggling injuries over the last month or two and with Djed Spence no longer able to provide cover, a left-back is pivotal.
Leeds are primarily targeting the Premier League loan market to strengthen their squad and one player who they should look at if he becomes is available is Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon.
According to Sky Sports, Spurs could look to loan out Sessegnon before the end of the window and he would be the perfect left-back for Leeds at this level.
Leeds should target Sessegnon deal
Spurs – who spent £25 million to sign him back in 2019 – are undecided on Sessegnon’s future at this stage but Leeds are willing to be patient in order to secure their first choice targets.
The 23-year-old has spent much of this season on the sidelines but made his return in the FA Cup almost two weeks ago, and regular football is now what he needs to return to full fitness.
He is going to find that tough to get at Spurs with Destiny Udogie very much first choice left-back, while Emerson Royal and Ben Davies are also likely to be ahead of him in terms of cover.
Sessegnon probably isn’t at the stage where he can play 90 minutes more than once a week, but that could dovetail perfectly with both Firpo and Byram, who are in a similar situation.
Sessegnon also has history in the Championship having won promotion with Fulham several years ago, and with his career at somewhat of a standstill, dropping down a division could be what he needs.
