‘The only one’… Kieran McKenna says Leeds have done something to Ipswich no other side have this season

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna singled Leeds United out for praise after his side’s 4-0 win at Millwall last night.

After a run of one win in nine matches, the Tractor Boys showed they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon in the automatic promotion race with an emphatic win in the capital.

The battle for second spot has very much intensified this week after Leeds moved into second for the first time this season, as Southampton’s 22-match unbeaten run came to an end at Bristol City.

McKenna was understandably delighted with the way his side performed at Millwall on Wednesday and despite their poor recent run, is proud of the fact they have been competitive in all those matches.

In fact, speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, McKenna believes Leeds are the only team in the division who have managed to take the game away from them comfortably.

McKenna says Leeds only side to stop Ipswich being competitive

He said: “We’ve been competitive in every game and that’s not easy to do in the Championship. Maybe the Leeds game is the only one that opened up really, other than that we’ve been competitive across 31 games against some really, really good sides.

“I sometimes take more pride in the culture that we’ve built when things don’t go our way. I know we’ll all keep pulling in the same direction and that if we keep doing the right things then good things will come our way.”

Ipswich have been beaten just four times in the league all season, but half of those came at the hands of Leeds. A 4-3 win at Portman Road in August, was followed by a 4-0 demolition in the return fixture at Elland Road.

It shows how good Leeds must’ve been that day given how tough every other Championship side has found playing them this season. Even Leicester City were unable to beat them in their two matches.

McKenna has praised Leeds before for being the best counter-attacking team in the division and it is sure to be an intense race between all three clubs until the end of the season.
