‘Spot on’… Daniel Farke says Leeds United duo were so important in win over Stoke City last night

Daniel Farke has given his verdict on Leeds United’s 1-0 win over Stoke City last night.

The Whites were certainly made to work for their three points against the Championship’s 22nd placed side, in what was a typical midweek encounter under the lights at Elland Road.

Dan James was the difference between the two sides on the night courtesy of a deflected first half strike, but it was the work at the other end which was vital to the victory.

Last night’s clean sheet made it eight in the last 11 matches for Leeds, and in that time, they have not conceded a single goal from open play, with the defence clearly the bedrock to the recent success.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Farke reserved praise for both Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu for their performances, while also highlighting backup duo Liam Cooper and Charlie Cresswell.

Farke praises Leeds centre-back options

He said: “That’s the key. Rodon and Ampadu or Cooper, Cresswell, they deserve all the praise because I never see them lose a duel. They are so spot on.”

Ampadu and Rodon have formed a formidable partnership at the back since playing alongside each other, with the two Wales internationals clearly enjoying playing together.

Rodon has been superb all season at centre-back, while Ampadu has filled in brilliantly for the injured Pascal Struijk since the turn of the New Year, with his best position definitely in midfield.

On a number of occasions this season, particularly in midweek, Leeds have been forced to soak up pressure and Ampadu and Rodon were able to deal with the majority Stoke threw at them.

Struijk should reclaim his place back in central defence once he does eventually return from injury, but it certainly won’t be forgotten how well Ampadu has covered for him.
