Leeds United eventually made their way into the fifth round of the FA Cup last night.
It might’ve taken 210 minutes of football, but Leeds’ quality eventually shone through over Plymouth Argyle as they romped to a 4-1 win after extra time.
Leeds were once again held to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of football but the strength in depth off the bench is what made the difference, with Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter the stars of the show with a goal and assist apiece.
Daniel Farke did not introduce Summerville from the bench until the 90th minute and while Leeds did go within an inch of winning it in stoppage time after his introduction, his extra-time cameo was superb.
Speaking in his post-match press conference after the game, Farke says he opted against bringing Summerville on earlier as he has been playing with ‘some strains’ recently.
Summerville playing through the pain barrier
He said: “Not tempted to put him in earlier. Created lots of load for him in recent weeks and generated some strains in his muscles of late.
“Knew extra time might be a chance, so we waited until the last minute to bring him in against exhausted opponents. If they are exhausted, they may not be ready to follow his movements. This was the plan for that.”

This is some good, careful management by Farke as there is no doubt supporters will have been crying out for his introduction earlier when the game was in the balance. He actually missed the original game at Elland Road due to injury.
However, Leeds have some far more important matches coming up later this month that they simply cannot afford to be without Summerville for, including Leicester City.
Summerville was a little bit wasteful in front of goal at Bristol City on Friday night and so getting back on the scoresheet in a brief little cameo from the bench should fill him with confidence again.
