Leeds United are being linked with a shock move for Galatasaray star Kerem Akturkoglu with talks said to be underway over a January move – and selling Willy Gnonto might just help pull off a deal.
Akturkoglu, 25, is in the form of his life this season. He has had a hand in 15 goals for the Turkish side, in just 27 games. A club that obviously, are seen as rivals by Leeds – after the incident back in April 2000.
Two Leeds fans were stabbed on the eve of a UEFA Cup semi-final nearly 24 years ago by Galatasaray fans. Since, Leeds have paid respects every year to the lives of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight.
Despite this, reports emerged from Turkey this week stating that Leeds have been in ‘frequent’ talks over a deal to sign the 26-time Turkey winger. Galatasaray are unwilling to sell him in the winter window.
Unless, the price is right. A player that has scored twice against Manchester United this season, and has earned praise from Barcelona manager Xavi in the past. Lazio are also said to be in talks for Akturkoglu.

But selling Gnonto might just help a deal. Not just because it makes a space for Akturkoglu, or it helps us financially. But, because Lazio also want Gnonto. Selling him to the Italians eliminates competition.
Lazio are also battling Roma in a move for Gnonto. It is believed then, that Gnonto and Akturkoglu are both on Lazio’s shortlist ahead of January, as Maurizio Sarri looks to improve his options on the flanks.
Whether or not Leeds are interested in “wizard” Akturkoglu remains to be seen. But Lazio may seem the more enticing option. If Leeds can strike a deal with Lazio for Gnonto, it helps us get Akturkoglu.
