Leeds United are said to have been in “frequent” talks over the last two weeks over a deal to sign Galatasaray attacker Kerem Akturkoglu in January – with Lazio also said to be interested in him.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise given that two Leeds fans – Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight – were murdered in 2000, on the eve of a UEFA Cup match. Nigel Martyn spoke to us about that night.
But news now comes from Fanatik, who say Leeds are attempting to put that rivalry aside as they look to do a deal for Turkey star Akturkoglu. The 25-year-old caught the eye after starring for the Turkish side.
This term, he has had a hand in 15 goals in 27 games this term. Four games shy of 150 for Galatasaray, he has 74 goals and assists. Forgetting the team he plays for, Akturkoglu is a seriously good player.
The report states that over the last fortnight, Leeds and Serie A giants Lazio have been in frequent contact over possibly striking a deal. But, the report says Galatasaray are unwilling to sell the attacker.

Not least, until the summer and little surprise given his impressive form – and that he has a contract until the summer of 2026. A player that has also caught the eye on the Champions League stage this term.
They secured a place in the Europa League after Christmas with Akturkoglu scoring twice, including one excellent finish in a 3-3 draw with Manchester United. He also scored in the 3-2 win at Old Trafford.
So, a proper player, one with 26 caps for his country. But realistically, it seems impossible that Leeds would be willing to sit down at the negotiating table with Galatasaray to agree deal between the clubs.
Do Leeds even need a winger? Maybe, if the likes of Willy Gnonto or Crysencio Summerville choose to leave in January. But, it is widely expected that Summerville at least, will be staying put at Elland Road.
