Leeds in talks for 25-year-old that has starred in Champions League, Xavi is a massive fan of him

Leeds United are in talks to sign Turkish star Kerem Akturkoglu from rivals Galatasaray in January, a player that won the praise of Barcelona boss Xavi in the past, prior to a 21-22 Europa League clash.

The 26-time Turkey star is on fire for Galatasaray. This term, more so than in the past. He has 15 goals and assists in just 27 league and cup games. Two goals vs Manchester United in the Champions League.

Of course, there is a rivalry between Leeds and Galatasaray, after two Leeds fans were stabbed prior to the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2000. Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight losing their lives before kick-off.

Turkish site Fanatik says Leeds have been in frequent talks to sign Akturkoglu – but Galatasaray are not open to his exit, at least in January. Whether we try to test that resolve next month, remains to be seen.

Back in 2021-22, Barcelona took on Galatasaray in the Europa League’s Round of 16. Speaking after the second leg, in which Barca won 2-1 on aggregate, Xavi raved about Galatasaray attacker Akturkoglu.

“I would especially like to draw attention to Kerem. He is a very fast player. One of Galatasaray’s best players. We took good precautions against him. We dominated the match,” Xavi said, as per Goal.

“Kerem has interesting talents. Very good one on one. He gave his all in two matches, but I think we analyzed Galatasaray well. We gave less opportunity, we found more opportunities,” Xavi continued.

There is no chance that Leeds manage to strike a deal in January, for a number of reasons. The first being that Galatasaray are not open to his exit in January, and clubs will have to wait until the summer.

The second being that Akturkoglu is a Premier League-quality player. Any chance of signing the Turkey man hinges on whether Leeds are in the top tier next season. But the main one, is that it is Galatasaray.

Leeds surely, would be wise enough not to do business with that club – given the rivalry, and anger that Leeds fans hold for Akturkoglu’s club. Something Leeds must tread carefully with, if it is indeed true.
