Leeds United’s need for a new left-back has only increased since the start of the January window following Djed Spence’s return to Tottenham – and one player that has been linked is Josh Doig.
Doig, 21, is impressing in Italy. After joining Verona from Hibernian in the summer of 2022, he has gone on to play 35 times for the Serie A club. He was made to wait last season, before clocking up 22 outings.
In that time, he has had a hand in six goals – before becoming first choice this time around. Daniel Farke says Leeds want a left-back, and Scottish star Doig is one of a number of names that have been linked.
But Leeds are not alone. The likes of Udinese, Torino, Rangers and most-recently, Gennaro Gattuso’s Marseille are also said to be in the mix – with Marseille tabling an offer of £4.3m for the Scottish flyer.
Verona want £5.5m for the defender and that value is yet to have been matched. Now, Alan Hutton has urged Rangers to sign the defender, with the Scottish pundit of the belief he would improve Rangers.
“I thought that he was a player that both teams in Glasgow would have looked at. All the attributes to be a modern-day full-back – physically strong, can get up and down the pitch,’ Hutton told Sky Sports.
“An attacking full-back, that’s how Rangers like to play. He’d come back a better player having played in Italy. You’d think defensively, he would be learning week in, week out. I think he’d do a really good job.”

Both Rangers and Leeds are in need of a left-back. The Gers are set to lose Borna Barisic at the end of the season, and Ridvan Yilmaz is being linked with a move to Italy, and could even be involved in a swap.
Leeds need a left-back, with Spence returning to Spurs and both Junior Firpo and Sam Byram regularly in the treatment room. Firpo is fit right now, but he cannot be relied upon. Doig would be a top addition.
