Leeds United would be ‘happy’ to keep Rodrigo in the Championship amid speculation linking him with a move away.
That is according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, who reports Leeds would like to retain the services of the 32-year-old but acknowledge given his age, he may want to take up a ‘good offer’ elsewhere.
In the weeks that immediately followed Leeds’ relegation Rodrigo was viewed as someone almost guaranteed to leave due to his wages that were seen as too much for this division.
However, as per this latest report, that stance seems to have changed a tad with Leeds open to keeping him even though he is in the final year of his contract at Elland Road.
Rodrigo has not been short of interest this summer with Everton and Fulham among the club’s interested in the Premier League, while Al-Rayyan of Qatar are said to be in talks.
Leeds would be happy to keep Rodrigo
Rodrigo’s agent and father spoke last month on the attacker’s future while he was away on international duty, stating that a conversation would need to be had with Leeds.
After getting back in the Spain squad for the Nations League, the most likely scenario at this stage does feel like a departure, particularly when you consider the sort of wages Qatar could offer him.
That said, Rodrigo would be an excellent player to keep with his ability clearly way beyond that of the Championship, with Micah Richards hailing him as ‘brilliant’ after his performance in the 3-0 win over Chelsea last August.
He enjoyed by far his best individual season to date last year, netting 13 goals and if he was to hit that same level in the second division, he would be on for arguably double that tally.
Leeds clearly understand this will be difficult, though, with Joel Piroe of Swansea among a list of targets they would like to bring in up front.
