Leeds United have a number of success stories under Daniel Farke, but Peter Crouch and Joe Hart believe one defender has been ‘excellent’ since his exit.
The Leeds United squad has had plenty of churn now that we are well into Daniel Farke’s third season in charge, but there are those who are the foundation of the team long-term since that first summer in 2023.
The likes of Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Ethan Ampadu, Willy Gnonto, Dan James, and Joel Piroe have all been regular members of the squad during the two Championship campaigns and remain involved in the Premier League.
Then, there are the loans who have come and gone. Manor Solomon and Joe Rothwell had a tangible and sizeable impact last term, while the likes of Djed Spence and Jaidon Anthony were not so successful the season prior.
Spence came in and performed well against Sheffield Wednesday. However, things like injuries stopped Spence from building rhythm and he was eventually allowed to exit the club from his loan from Spurs.

Djed Spence’s progression at Spurs praised by Joe Hart and Peter Crouch
Spence did not feature much at all for Leeds under Farke in 2023/24 and his loan from Spurs to Leeds was eventually cut short. The decision on the full-back was a shock.
However, ultimately, Farke chose to allow Spence to leave after just seven Leeds appearances. He has gone on to become a well-rounded full-back and Peter Crouch and Joe Hart discussed the matter on TNT Sports.
Crouch said: “I actually spent a bit of time at the training ground and, obviously, I was asking what he was like.
“I’ve not met him before and he’s really popular. He’s had such a journey and I admire the journey myself, coming through the ranks to play Premier League football.
“He went to different countries. He came here (Leeds) and had a difficult spell. But then finds himself at home in this Spurs side. He’s got himself in the England squad now and I think he’s here to stay.”
Hart added: “He’s done excellent, hasn’t he? To be sat there and talking about the triumphs and the stuff that he’s been through — relatively young early in his career — really resilient.
“I kind of felt there was a negative air around his name in previous years. Loans not quite going to plan but he’s stayed strong. He’s kept his personality. He’s kept his focus. He looks really at home in the Premier League and in an England shirt.”
Crouch replied: “You know what I liked about him? His first talk was about people not going past him. Defending, first and foremost.
“Quite often now, you see full-backs and all they want to do is go forward consistently. He’s talking about taking pride in someone not going past him and I found that refreshing.”
Hart: “He’s building into an interesting character and a good career.”
Spence is playing for England again. On being able to play both full-back roles and that helping become an England regular, Crouch added: “Yeah, I was talking about this a couple of minutes ago. You look at Trippier, it was a shoo-in really.
“Because he can play either side, and I think the same with Djed Spence, it’s just another string to his bow.”

Phil Hay explains why Djed Spence was let go by Daniel Farke
The player he has gone on to become will come as a huge frustration for Leeds, given that he could have been utilised as a right-back in the same way Jayden Bogle was instead of Archie Gray.
Phil Hay explained Spence’s early Leeds exit last year, saying: “Farke was careful not to throw him completely under the bus, but the biggest issues for Farke were the performance levels.
“It just wasn’t quite right. It wasn’t what he’s looking for. There were issues with lateness and things like that and, in the end it, made more sense for Leeds to send him back.”
The talent was always there, though, with Spence one of the best players in the Championship with Nottingham Forest in 2021/22.
