Djed Spence finally won his first start for Leeds United on Tuesday during the loss to Sunderland, and Ben Parker says the Tottenham Hotspur loanee is the best right-back in the Championship.

Spence, 23, finally got a start on Tuesday. It comes after making his debut against Sheffield Wednesday back in September – only to pick up an injury that kept him sidelined until Saturday, against Blackburn.

He came on as a sub, replacing Sam Byram on the left during the 2-0 win – as the Whites cruised to a win. He continued to replace Byram on Tuesday, but Daniel Farke‘s side lost to Sunderland on Wearside.

Of course, Spence is renowned for just how good he has been in the past, in England’s second tier. He was exceptional during Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League during the 21-22 season.

But he has only played three times for Leeds, one start. Despite that, former Leeds man Parker has told LS11 that Spence is the best right-back in the Championship – even if he is yet to show it this season.

“He’s an unbelievable player. Arguably the best right-back in the division. I thought it looked like it was his first start for a while. Exciting flashes, but simple passes astray. A mixed bag from him,” he told LS11.

“But to have him back is huge for us going into Christmas. To have him fighting to get into the team, everyone expects a fully fit Djed Spence to start – but Archie Gray has been superb,” Parker added.

At his best, there is no doubt that Spence is in the conversation. Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira and even James Justin, who can play all over the defence, may have reason to argue with Parker’s comments.

But to have Spence fit again and with minutes under his belt is only going to help Leeds, ahead of the Christmas period. Come Saturday, Leeds will have four games in 13 days. Rotation will be absolutely key.
