New signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin shouldn’t actually be at Leeds United, according to Bryn Law

LUTV commentator Bryn Law believes Leeds United have pulled off a significant coup with the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin after he scored his first goal for the club.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brought to the club on a free transfer from Everton and handed the number nine shirt in a significant vote of confidence.

The Sheffield-born forward has significant Premier League experience and showed flashes of the qualities that earned him a place in the England squad with his maiden goal for the club.

Leeds fought off serious competition to bring Calvert-Lewin to the club, with reports suggesting that Newcastle United, Manchester United and AC Milan all held talks for the forward this summer.

Now, Law has praised Calvert-Lewin after his goal-scoring performance against Wolves, highlighting the difference between him and Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare.

Bryn Law praises Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Speaking on the West Stand Podcast by the Square Ball, Law admitted that Calvert-Lewin may not have joined Leeds were it not for his long and chequered past with injuries.

However, Law believes Leeds will benefit from having a fit and firing Calvert-Lewin at the club, as he looks to prove that his injury nightmare is now fully behind him. Law said: “Let’s be honest about this, he shouldn’t really be at Leeds, should he?

“He shouldn’t be at Leeds, or he shouldn’t have arrived at Leeds for what was it, nothing? Because he is a guy with a Premier League reputation, he’s a striker; there are very, very few of these people, Premier League strikers.

“There aren’t many of them about. Look at the lad that Wolves had up front, who they’d signed for 25 million on Saturday, and who did not have a great day. They’ve been casting around to try to get somebody to be a striker in the Premier League.

“There’s a big difference between trying to be that and actually having been it. But Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been it, and still is it by the way. So, he shouldn’t have arrived, at least his next move from Everton should have been, I’ll say, a big club or somebody big abroad.

“So, something’s happened there clearly in his career which hasn’t helped him. He’s proving a point here, but you have actually still got a guy who has most definitely done the thing that you want your Premier League striker to do.”

New Leeds United striker can add a new angle

Leeds scored 95 goals, at a rate of more than two goals per game, as they romped to the Championship title under Farke last season.

However, according to the data from FBRef, only nine of Leeds’ goals came from headers. Although Leeds’ leading scorer, Joel Piroe, has a lot of qualities, he is not a traditional target man in the mould of Calvert-Lewin.

No single Leeds player scored more than two headed goals in their run to the Championship title, with Piroe, Pascal Struijk, and Junior Firpo all scoring two headed goals.

With one headed goal on the board already, Calvert-Lewin will be hoping that he can comfortably beat that mark this season.
