‘Madness’… Leeds United fans are convinced that the 49ers have made a £3.8m ‘mistake’

The 49ers will need to make a serious impression this window to prove that they are the right owners for Leeds United.

Everything is pointing in the right direction for Paraag Marathe’s project to work at Leeds.

Although the last two transfer windows have been underwhelming, Marathe wants Europe for Leeds, indicating ambition will be taken this summer.

It’s unclear whether that will happen, as actions speak louder than words, and the owners went against Marathe’s pledge of spending aggressively.

They’ve got the chance to prove this over the next few months, but a past error they made isn’t being forgiven.

Leeds United fans think selling Charlie Cresswell was a ‘mistake’

So far, there haven’t been many grave errors made by the 49ers, and the club are definitely run more sustainably than they were.

But this doesn’t mean they haven’t had the odd mistake; this one could prove to be a massive one.

Charlie Cresswell was sold from Leeds for £3.8m in the summer of 2024, and now it’s come to the surface that Cresswell will be worth a fortune.

This is after his performances for parent club Toulouse, but now also England under-21s, as the 22-year-old has shown his class in the opening game of this year’s EURO U-21 tournament, scoring in England’s 3-1 win over Czech Republic.

Well, after seeing this, Leeds fans are not happy in the slightest, as their £3.8m sale is proving to be awful business.

The 49ers have a lot to answer for, and fans flocked over to X to express their frustration with the sale almost a year on.

@stablemate1 said: “Don’t get it with Charlie Cresswell, never got a look in under Farke, but England international and looks solid.”

@Robertkas88 claimed: “Remember when Cresswell was 18 and (Marcelo) Bielsa knew how good he was! Now look where his career is going. Farke got that one wrong big time!”

“Do have a feeling that we will regret selling him, feel he would be better suited to the prem with us as we’d be having much less of the ball and he’s a good box defender, would’ve be a good back up to Rodon in the prem but doubt he’d want that anyway,” @dy1anlufc explained.

Cresswell’s display for England puts Leeds United to shame

It was certainly a bizarre move from the 49ers, as Cresswell was showing promise

The defender was still learning his trade at Elland Road, and it seemed as though a loan would’ve sufficed, but instead, Cresswell is now dominating in Ligue 1 and proved that with his performance for England on Thursday night.

It’s nothing short of a howler from the Leeds hierarchy, who will be seriously regretting their choice no doubt.

They’ve got a lot of making up to do for the fans, but the 49ers’ saving grace is that Cresswell hasn’t ruled out a return, and the hope is that this comes to fruition one day.
