It’s now become obvious that Paraag Marathe has gone back on his pledge at Leeds United

Since Paraag Marathe led the takeover process at Leeds United in July 2023 there have been highs and lows at Elland Road.

It’s been a fairly successful year and a half of the 49ers’ ownership of Leeds as many on-field and off-field decisions have been made.

Marathe and Daniel Farke have a great working relationship and have shown that throughout his tenure in Yorkshire.

Despite this, doubt has been cast over Farke at Leeds, as their bid for promotion to the Premier League has turned from a want to a need.

The Leeds faithful may recall something Marathe said back in July in terms of his plan to get back to the top flight.

What Paraag Marathe said about Leeds United’s transfer window plan

Back in July 2023, Marathe hopped on the official Leeds United podcast (22:47), detailing his plans for the Leeds squad in the transfer market.

Marathe made it clear that he would be ‘aggressive’ in the transfer windows moving forward to ensure Leeds returned to the Premier League after relegation in May 2023.

“The short-term plan is to put as competitive a squad together on the pitch as we can,” Marathe said.

“I want to give him (manager Daniel Farke) all the resources that he needs off the pitch, but also trying to maximise the resources we can keep on the pitch.”

He added: “I do think especially now given this transitional period and my expertise, it is not just I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work, but I think I have particular expertise to help do that.

“We want to be aggressive and get right back up as soon as we can and do what it takes. Because to us, the Championship is hopefully just a speed-bump in our way to a much longer path that we are going on.”

Marathe ended his pledge with: “We want to be as aggressive as we can be, which is probably going to require us to be as creative as we can be as well.

Marathe’s pledge hasn’t lived up to the expectation so far at Leeds

The ambition was there from the off when Marathe came in at the start of the 2023/24 season.

Ethan Ampadu, Joel Piroe, and Joe Rodon were certainly a statement of intent from the new Leeds owners who left fans dreaming of a Premier League return.

However, it wasn’t to be after falling to defeat at Wembley against Southampton which left many questioning Farke.

Alas, the 49ers were adamant about sticking with Farke, and the aim was thought to be after this summer that Leeds fans wanted more action in January, but it’s been anything but that.

The key elements Leeds are lacking are arguably the most important parts of the pitch.

Illan Meslier has frustrated Leeds fans as the Yorkshire faithful are demanding a new keeper enters the frame.

The other, a striker, which could be the difference between the Championship and the Premier League with costly chances going to waste.

Most big chances missed in the Championship
1.Coventry City – 48
2.Leeds United – 46
3.Norwich City – 46
4.Luton Town – 39

Marathe has ticked most of the boxes so far, but it’s of most importance that the 49ers stick to their transfer window pledge and show ‘aggressive’ intent in pursuit of a Premier League return.
