As it turns out, one former Leeds United star could’ve joined Liverpool last summer. But he decided against the move in the end.

Last summer’s transfer window was a lucrative one for Leeds United who cashed in on a horde of players, some going for huge transfer fees.

It enabled the Whites to do some spending of their own with Leeds completing a £10m deal for Joe Rodon, also signing the likes of Jayden Bogle and Largie Ramazani.

It’s given Daniel Farke a more tight knit squad for this season’s Championship campaign which is so far going to plan for Leeds.

They sit in 2nd place of the Championship table despite a 1-1 draw at Preston last time out, with a return to Elland Road against Oxford United on the cards for this weekend.

And Leeds United have the sale of Archie Gray to thank for much of their summer income, with the teenager sealing a £30million move to Tottenham Hotspur in the end.

Archie Gray snubbed Man City before Spurs move

Gray has since featured nine times in the Premier League for Spurs, also starting in Spurs’ cup defeat against Manchester United on Thursday night.

The 18-year-old is getting that all important game time in the Premier League and seemingly improving very quickly.

In a recent column from Daily Mail, journalist Sami Mokbel writes that Spurs promised Gray game time should he have joined in the summer.

Mokbel then goes on to reveal that Spurs ‘beat competition’ from Premier League giants Manchester City and Liverpool to the signing of Gray.

Archie Gray has avoided Kalvin Phillips-type mishap

Gray could’ve followed in the footsteps of former Leeds United favourite Kalvin Phillips by leaving Elland Road for the Etihad Stadium.

But he may be glad he didn’t. He’s getting good amounts of game time this season whilst Phillips is now struggling in a loan move away from City at Ipswich Town.

Man City will look to sell Phillips in 2025 and so for Leeds, who wanted to re-sign Phillips should they have earned promotion last season, the door could be open for a possible return in 2025.

And there’s plenty of younger players who’ve joined Liverpool’s ranks in recent years and have been wasted in the academy for too long, so for Gray, Spurs is looking like a very good decision.

As for Gray, the future is certainly looking bright. He’s playing in numerous positions and getting some great experience in doing so, playing against and alongside some top players.
