Tony Dorigo says Leeds United player got it ‘all wrong’ in crucial moment against Preston on Saturday afternoon

Leeds United have not been able to match their home form when on the road this season and again on Saturday, they were lucky not to avoid defeat against Preston North End.

Having won two games in a row, Leeds might’ve felt confident going into Saturday’s clash against Preston despite previously winning just three of their nine games not at Elland Road during the 2024-25 season.

Indeed, Leeds struggled again and only equalised in injury time after Brad Potts had given Preston a late lead. Leeds were unlucky, given Daniel Farke’s side might’ve been playing against 10 men on another day.

Dan James hit the bar and both Patrick Bamford and Brenden Aaronson had chances to score for Leeds on the day. But it wasn’t to be, even after an own goal from Preston defender Jack Whatmough.

Tony Dorigo blasts Brenden Aaronson for moment in first half

Aaronson’s chance came in the first half, not long after Preston’s goal. Joel Piroe played the ball across and after a little touch from Sam Byram, Aaronson was bearing down on goal with the keeper to beat.

Somehow, the USA star managed to skew a shot high and wide and unable to add to his six goals and assists this season. A real chance to cancel out Preston’s goal and steal ascendancy back from Preston.

On LUTV during his role as co-commentator, Tony Dorigo could not believe just how poor Aaronson’s effort was: “It’s excellent play, it really is. Piroe gets into a channel, spins and turns, finds the pass.

“Little touch from Byram is wonderful. It opens up for Aaronson, you could see what he was trying to do, took his time, trying to find that far corner but the ball pops up at the wrong time. He gets it all wrong.”

Saturday showing reminds Daniel Farke a no.10 is a priority

Aaronson incredibly remains Leeds’ second-highest goalscorer at the moment with five, behind Joel Piroe. But had he taken his chances, or timed his passes better, his numbers would look so, so much better.

Aaronson is aiming for 15 goals and 15 assists this season but as we near the halfway stage, the USA star has just a fifth of his overall target. Currently on six involvements for 24-25, he is aiming for a huge 30.

The £25m man has bundles of energy, his movement is excellent and Ben Whiteman’s first yellow card is a reminder of how effortless he is in transition. If only, Aaronson could score and assist in a Leeds shirt.
