Liverpool academy striker Oakley Cannonier on trial at Leeds

The Leeds boss is clearly an admirer of promoting youth through his squad, as Farke wanted a ‘relatively young’ approach this January.

Although this doesn’t look like it will happen with the lack of signings for the first team, the academy could be strengthened.

According to journalist, James Pearce, via The Athletic, Leeds have exciting Liverpool talent Oakley Cannonier potentially joining their ranks.

Pearce says Liverpool academy striker Cannonier is spending this week on trial at Leeds, as the 20-year-old played the final half-hour in Leeds Under-21s’ 2-1 defeat against West Ham.

Cannonier was born in the Yorkshire City and played for the Whites at youth level before joining Liverpool in 2015.

The youngster has been a prolific goalscorer for the Reds’ academy but has suffered injuries in recent seasons, which Leeds may need to keep an eye on.

Leeds trialist Cannonier is a part of iconic Champions League moment

As the 49ers are saving money for the summer, Leeds acquiring Cannonier would bring some much-needed excitement around Elland Road.

Leeds have had their fair share of iconic moments over the years, but it will be difficult to top what the 20-year-old was involved in back in 2019.

Everyone in the footballing world remembers Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner which was taken quickly in the Champions League.

Well, Cannonier made headlines, as the player now on Leeds’ radar was the ball boy who enabled Alexander-Arnold to send in the corner for Divock Origi, who scored the decisive goal in Liverpool’s stunning fightback from 3-0 down against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.

It’s an exciting prospect for Leeds, who will no doubt be hoping to secure Cannonier’s signature.
