Leeds United now want to sign player who was once valued at £50m

Leeds United are predominantly in the market for new defenders this month.

Full-back is very much Leeds’ priority at the moment, though they will have to get somewhat of a wriggle on with just nine days of the window remaining.

Leeds have very much been looking at the Premier League loan market in their quest to strengthen and have been linked with the likes of Ben Johnson, Ryan Giles, Connor Roberts and Neco Williams.

However, while all of those are full-backs, they have also been newly linked to a central defender from the Premier League this week, which could be needed if Charlie Cresswell leaves as expected.

According to Italian site CalcioMercato, Leeds are set to battle it out with Sheffield United and even AC Milan to sign Everton defender Ben Godfrey, who is very much on the fringes at Goodison Park.

Leeds target Godfrey once valued at £50m

Godfrey signed for Everton from Daniel Farke’s former side Norwich City back in 2020 for a deal worth in the region of £25 million. Having been a key part of the Everton side in his first two seasons, game time has been much harder to come by in the last two.

He has made just 15 Premier League appearances since August 2022, with a string of injury problems having really stunted his progression as a player.

However, back under Farke at Norwich, Godfrey was one of the most sought-after defenders in England and according to Sky Sports was valued at £50 million by the Canaries, amid interest from Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

With that in mind, it is obvious that Farke is a big fan of the 26-year-old and so it would make a lot of sense if Leeds are to pursue him.

Godfrey is from Yorkshire and so a return to his former county, to work under a manager who knows him very well, could be exactly what he needs this month.
