Leeds United hero Mateusz Klich at centre of transfer U-turn with six-figure switch now on the cards

Former Leeds United star Mateusz Klich has been at the centre of a transfer saga recently. But it looks like a conclusion has been found.

Mateusz Klich, 34, has been playing with D.C. United in the MLS since leaving Leeds United in 2023.

He’s made 70 total appearances for the club, with seven goals and 13 assists to his name. But his contract with the club expires at the end of 2024.

Recently, it was claimed that Klich was returning to Poland with Cracovia, with reports suggesting that Klich and Cracovia were in talks over an emotional return for the midfielder.

And amid his uncertain situation, Leeds fans have called for Klich’s return to Elland Road during the January transfer window, although that’s never seemingly been on the cards.

Klich played for Leeds between 2017 and 2023. He made 195 total appearances and scored 24 goals with 21 assists as well, playing a key role in the 2019/20 promotion side.

Mateusz Klich now poised for MLS switch amid transfer U-turn

Despite having been in talks over a return to Poland, it now looks as though Klich will remain in the US, leaving D.C. to join Atlanta United.

An emerging report from GIVEMESPORT says that Atlanta are ‘finalising a move’ for Klich in a deal worth an initial $300,000 in GAM (General Allocation Money).

Each MLS team has GAM and it can be used in different ways: e.g. to bring down a player’s salary, which is likely the case with Klich given the fact that he’s set to become a free agent.

Klich will be playing alongside names like former Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan and former Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City defender Derrick Williams at Atlanta.

Mateusz Klich’s one Leeds United promotion regret

Speaking in an interview earlier this season, Klich spoke about his promotion with Leeds United and the one regret he has from it.

Klich said he regrets there not being any fans to celebrate their promotion with given the fact that the promotion was sealed during the Covid pandemic.

Klich explained: “The only thing I regret — that we got promoted during Covid, and there were no fans in the stadium or a parade in the city.”

At nearly 35, Klich is still going strong in the MLS, and he’ll be hoping that his promotion experience with Leeds can hold him in good stead with Atlanta in the upcoming 2025 MLS campaign.
