After almost two years since Mateusz Klich left Leeds United during Jesse Marsch’s era, the Polish midfielder is set for another move and it looks set to be an emotional one.
Rewind to the summer of 2017 and Leeds bought Mateusz Klich for £1.5m from Dutch side FC Twente. But his Leeds career did not get going until Marcelo Bielsa arrived as Leeds manager a year later.
Indeed, Klich struggled in his first season and even went on loan to FC Utrecht from January 2018 until the summer. But, under Bielsa, the Pole became a crucial part of his Leeds side that won promotion.
Renowned for his long-range shooting, lung-busting stamina, incredible consistency and availability, Klich became an Elland Road icon for his unerring ability to wind up opponents in a Leeds shirt under Bielsa.
Mateusz Klich now set for new club two years after Leeds exit
After 195 Leeds outings and 40 goals and assists, Klich chose to leave after a lack of game time under Marsch and he chose to join DC United with Wayne Rooney as boss. He’s remained for the last two years.
But his DC United deal expires at the end of the month, and Klich is set for a new club. Reporter Lukasz Olkowicz and Poland international Tomasz Kupisz appeared on Meczyki’s show this week, discussing Klich.
Olkowicz reported that talks between Klich and his first club Cracovia are underway, while Kupisz said that he had spoken to Klich and said that the midfielder’s desire is to return to his boyhood club in January.
Olkowicz told Polish site Meczyki: “Yes, such talks [Klich returning to Cracovia] are underway. This move can be made in the winter. Mateusz Klich will be 35 in six months, and he is still associated with Cracovia.”
Kupisz responded to Olkowicz: “Mateusz mentioned to me in the messages that he wants to come back to Cracovia. For him it’s a nice incentive that he’ll be able to play for something more with Cracovia.”
Klich once said he’d love to return to Leeds to reach 200 games
It is fair to say that Klich did not want to leave Leeds in the way he did. But with the Euros coming at the end of the 2022-23 season, Klich was desperate to get game time to win a place in Poland’s squad.
But it was too late, and he failed to make the squad. Soon after his move to DC, Klich said he would love to return to Leeds to play the remaining five games needed to reach the landmark of 200 Leeds outings.
However, with Klich turning 35 at the end of the 2024-25 season, he looks set for a return to his first club Cracovia who currently sit in fifth place in Poland’s top tier having previously played 58 times for them.
