Mateusz Klich remains an iconic figure at Elland Road after his five-and-a-half-year spell on the Leeds United books, but the Polish ace is set for a new chapter in January.
It is two years since the 34-year-old left Leeds to join MLS side DC United, where he has since worked with Wayne Rooney and Christian Benteke among others. He left, largely due to manager Jesse Marsch.
Joining Leeds in the summer of 2017, Klich’s future was a doubt when Marcelo Bielsa arrived a year later. But following the Argentine’s arrival, Klich went on to clock up a massive 195 games for The Whites.
He was crucial in Leeds’ promotion, scoring goals from long range and winding up opponents. But his last six months at Elland Road did not go to plan with Marsch preferring not to play the Polish midfielder.
Leeds fans urge Mateusz Klich to return to Elland Road in January
Desperate to get game time and play for Poland at the World Cup in Qatar, Klich chose to leave Leeds after that chance was denied given Marsch hardly used him. He moved to America with DC United.
After two years in DC, his contract is about to expire. Klich is set for a return to boyhood side Cracovia but Leeds fans have responded to the news that Klich is on the move and have urged him to return to Leeds.
One Leeds supporter said “we could do with long-range shooting”. Such a trait of Klich’s ability that Leeds fans even conjured up a song about it. Another simply said “I’d have him back”.
Another wrote “did somebody say we need a centre-mid that can score goals”, while one said “bring him back if only to light another cigar at the end of the season”, an image now iconic among fans.
Given his age, one said they would give him a contract worth “6 months”, and another simply replied by saying “we need a midfielder”. Leeds fans then, want Klich to come back to Elland Road.

Speaking shortly after his move to DC United from Leeds, Klich actually said he’d love to return to Leeds. Indeed, he spoke of how he was only five matches short of clocking up a total of 200 games for Leeds.
He said he would return to complete that milestone but with Daniel Farke in the hotseat, that seems like it would be unlikely. A shame, especially because Klich never actually wanted to leave Leeds, when he did.
A return to his first club Cracovia, with whom he came through the academy before playing 58 times at senior level looks more likely. Klich’s contract at DC expired on December 31, making him a free agent.
