Leeds United fans react to Mateo Joseph comments about his Elland Road future, he has to ‘earn it’

Mateo Joseph continues to be linked with a move away from Leeds United, with the young striker recently commenting on his future.

Leeds United have a big decision to make and it’s been said previously that Leeds value Joseph at around £12.75 million and there have been other reports stating Real Betis are planning for Joseph talks with Leeds this month.

Betis reportedly offered £10 million for Joseph in January in a bid which Leeds were swift to reject ahead of the deadline. However, despite Daniel Farke calling Joseph ‘important’, he was hardly utilised in the second half of the season.

Farke then admitted Joseph failed to take his Leeds chance in the cameos he got in the latter stages of the year, and his future could now lie elsewhere.

Leeds United supporters react to Mateo Joseph’s latest comments

Of course, with the U-21 European Championships this summer, Leeds will want to keep Joseph and see his progress but the reports linking him to Spain continue. Betis want a Joseph deal worth £6.75 million but with a 20% clause.

Interest is mounting, though, with Birmingham City interested in Joseph. Now, he has spoken on his future and Leeds fans have reacted to the latest response regarding his “participation” for the team.

Another said: “More we listen to him more certain thing crop up. Lot of confidence which I really like, but maybe too much for someone so unproven? I wonder if his game-time had something to do with a disagreement kind of thing with Farke? Just doesn’t come across well in his interviews.”

Two further replies read: “he won’t get that here so he should move on” and “Seems pretty clear to me.. he will be leaving.”

Another made it clear regarding Joseph’s lack of minutes, adding: “Needs to deliver if he wants more participation.”

Speaking so publicly about his future was always going to risk a response, and Leeds fans are mostly aligned on their view of Joseph earning it.

The case for retaining Mateo Joseph at Leeds

Danny Mills thinks Leeds should sell Joseph and sacrifice him over Willy Gnonto or Pascal Struijk. However, the writing looks on the wall when Lukas Nmecha has been signed and Leeds are looking at other strikers, too.

It was his first full season as a professional last year, thus judging him too harshly is perhaps unfair. He is yet to break past 2000 professional minutes, which is the equivalent of less than 22 full 90-minute games.

The rejected bids previously are a vote of confidence in Joseph’s long-term potential and his development, with the young Spaniard likely to cost a lot more as an asset in the future if he grows and improves further.
