Kieron Dyer says player Leeds United sold for just £1m in 2022 is now Premier League quality

Kieron Dyer believes former Leeds United left-back Leif Davis is the only Premier League quality player in Ipswich Town’s squad.

Ipswich currently sit seven points clear of Leeds in second place after a phenomenal start to the season following last season’s promotion from League One.

And Davis has been a key part of that Ipswich squad that has dropped just 12 points all season, as he has the most assists in the Championship with nine, just ahead of Norwich City’s Gabriel Sara and Leeds’ Georginio Rutter.

Former Ipswich midfielder and coach Dyer was speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday, where he claimed aside from Premier League quality Davis, the rest are top level Championship players.

He said: “If I look at the Ipswich squad I’d say Leif Davis, the left-back is probably a Premier League player. The rest are top Championship players and it has been a fantastic season.”

Leeds live to regret Davis sale

Leeds sold Davis to Ipswich for just £1 million back in the summer of 2022, which at the time looked like a decent deal for all parties following his disappointing loan spell at Bournemouth.

He got 14 assists in Ipswich’s promotion campaign last season and is well on course to smash that tally in a higher division, as he is just five away.

Looking back on the transfer now, you could argue that Leeds undervalued Davis somewhat, though no one would’ve predicted that he would go on to do this well.

Leeds have had their problems at left-back over the last few years but the free transfer signing of Sam Byram in the summer has definitely eased them this season.

However, Davis will be looking to pip his side to automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, and will no doubt play a key role if Ipswich end up doing so.
