If reports are true, Leeds United could be about to make a big transfer mistake

Leeds United are likely to have a fairly quiet January transfer window.

Daniel Farke has already confirmed that the priority next month will be to keep the club’s key players, but that does not necessarily mean there won’t be any incomings.

Farke has recognised the need to bring in a new left-back as Sam Byram and Junior Firpo continue to struggle with injuries, while a number 10 may also be on the agenda.

But perhaps the most intense transfer link at the moment is Galatasaray’s Kerem Akturkoglu, with reports suggesting Leeds have held talks over his signing for the last two weeks.

It is also said that Leeds would be willing to spend just shy of £13 million to sign him and although he is a good player, it would be a mistake to bring him in.

Leeds don’t need Akturkoglu next month

Akturkoglu has, at times, played as an attacking midfielder this season, but his best position is most certainly on the left, which is arguably where Leeds are strongest.

Crysencio Summerville’s 10 goals and six assists very much has it on lock, while Willy Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony are great options at this level who are having to settle for minutes off the bench.

Spending that sort of money on a position that isn’t needed as a Championship club would be daft. The funds would be put to better use on a creative number 10, who can unlock tight defences with their passing ability.

Leeds have struggled against low defensive lines at times this season, none more so in the last two matches. £13 million goes a long way in this league, but it has to be on the right man.

Angus Kinnear has suggested the bulk of Leeds’ transfer strategy will be made up of loans, which would probably represent a smarter way to go about January anyway.
