‘I didn’t realise’… Patrick Bamford shares why he felt like an ‘idiot’ after scoring for Leeds last night

Leeds United produced an incredible late comeback to overcome Leicester City 3-1 at Elland Road last night.

The Whites had been trailing for most of the match through Wout Faes’ early header and were perhaps fortunate to still be in the game after a number of missed chances in the second half from the away side.

However, Daniel Farke’s substitutions were ultimately able to change the game, with Connor Roberts and Patrick Bamford both getting on the scoresheet either side of Archie Gray’s winning goal.

There weren’t many in the ground who realised it was actually Bamford who scored, as he deflected Dan James’ powerful free-kick past Mads Hermansen to cap off a brilliant evening.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Bamford revealed it was not only the supporters who didn’t realise it was his goal, but the players too, as they all ran off and celebrated away from him.

Bamford jokes he felt an ‘idiot’

He said: “Do you know what, as I was running off, I didn’t realise. I turned round, everyone’s on the other side of the pitch. So I looked a bit of an idiot there.”

You could’ve made a case for Leeds being the better side in the first half with the chances Joel Piroe, Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville all passed up.

However, for around 25 minutes after the break, Leicester were ripping Leeds apart and were guilty of missing some massive chances through the likes of Stephy Mavididi and Patson Daka.

But Farke’s decision to bring on James, Bamford and Roberts proved to be inspired as they all contributed massively in completely turning the game on its head.

It just shows how important using the bench is, particularly with the amount of quality Leeds have on it as ultimately, that proved to be the difference between the two sides.
