Leeds United have been able to start planning for the Premier League for a couple of weeks now but can ramp that up further after their clash with Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.
Over the coming weeks and months, Leeds will have to make a number of major decisions regarding current players but also in terms of transfers into the club. Daniel Farke and co. will also need to decide which younger players to loan, sell, or feature more in their first-team plans.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 45 | 28 | 13 | 4 | 93 | 29 | 64 | 97 | |
| 2 | 45 | 27 | 16 | 2 | 66 | 15 | 51 | 97 | |
| 3 | 45 | 28 | 7 | 10 | 62 | 35 | 27 | 89 | |
| 4 | 45 | 21 | 13 | 11 | 58 | 43 | 15 | 76 |
There are some players who will be perceived as capable of making the step up, others who may be considered as too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League, and others who are simply not cut out whatsoever for English football’s top tier.
But the glory and the financial reward of promotion is not in doubt and will unlock doors to sign numerous new faces at the club. It’s absolutely necessary to give them their best chance of survival, even at the detriment to the development of others.

Leeds fans react to Mateo Joseph exit rumours
One player who was featuring more regularly at the start of 2024/25 was Mateo Joseph, with the young Spaniard now with the Whites for four seasons. He has shown signs of promise, but also inconsistency due to being just 21 and in his first season as a professional.
Despite his lack of game time in recent months Joseph is supposedly a ‘very high-level’ talent, which is why there has been interest in him previously. This became apparent in January as Joseph almost joined Real Betis for £8 million. However, the Spanish club have now emerged as an option again.
It’s looking more and more likely that an exit could happen, even though Joseph didn’t push for the Betis move, he could have a different stance this summer. The club’s stance is not yet clear, though, with fans reacting on Twitter/X to the news of what they are hoping for.
Another argued: “Unless we had a significant sell on clause, I think this would come back to bite us. I think he’ll become a very good ST in the future, even if not at #LUFC but we can’t afford to lose out if that’s the case.”
The same sentiment was shared across most. Another fan argued: “I’d far prefer it if he was loaned out, but there comes a point where it becomes too good an offer to turn down #lufc”
Others were more simple with their response on the 21-year-old: “Do NOT sell Joseph”
The club won’t want another situation where they sell an Archie Gray for £40 million, and this is why it is vital they remain in the top flight. That is why they have set an eight-figure price tag already for Joseph, who they will hope to develop further to achieve more of his potential in the coming years.

Mateo Joseph’s Leeds career goals and assists so far
Despite Farke calling Joseph ‘important’, he’s hardly played and it’s not reflected well on Farke or the striker. His development risks stalling without regular game time next term, which is why a loan appears to be best for all parties involved.
| Mateo Joseph season comparison (all comps) | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Season | Appearances | Starts | Minutes | Goals | Assists |
| 2022/23 | 6 | 1 | 130 | 0 | 0 |
| 2023/24 | 26 | 2 | 415 | 3 | 0 |
| 2024/25 | 40 | 13 | 1449 | 3 | 3 |
In terms of minutes alone, his goal and assist return still looks decent. However, he now needs a full season as a professional with 30+ starts in a competitive league. That could be the Championship or in the first or second tier of Spanish football.
One thing is for certain, which is that Joseph is not yet ready for regular starts in English football’s elite tier. There are too many uncertainties in his game to rely on him, even as a bench option. Plus, he cannot fulfill his potential with just cameo appearances.
