Former Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville was handed his third start for West Ham away at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
West Ham were comfortably dispatched 5-1 by former Leeds managerial target Arne Slot‘s side, with strikes from Diogo Jota (2), Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo cancelling out Jarell Quansah’s own goal.
Incidentally, this was Summerville’s first appearance back at Anfield since his winner for Leeds in that 2-1 victory almost two years ago.
Summerville‘s goal in that game was iconic for so many reasons, but perhaps none more so than ending Virgil van Dijk’s 70-match unbeaten home run as a Liverpool player.
However, Summerville did not quite enjoy the same success as last time out as West Ham’s journey in the Carabao Cup came to an emphatic end on Merseyside.
What West Ham’s local media made of Summerville vs Liverpool
It has not been an easy start for Summerville at West Ham. He only got his full league debut for the Hammers on Saturday, a game in which he was brought off after 54 minutes with Chelsea 3-0 ahead.
Summerville also failed to pull up any trees in the last round victory over Luis Sinisterra’s Bournemouth. Paul Merson recently suggested he might struggle in the Premier League.
Having said that, although he was brought off early against Chelsea, many thought he shouldn’t. In fact, West Ham supporters booed manager Julen Lopetegui for his withdrawal.
And according to West Ham’s local press London World, Summerville was again one of West Ham’s biggest dangermen at Anfield, even if he did lack the end product.
They wrote: “Crysencio Summerville 6 – Had his moments of danger with his pace, suggesting he deserves a regular role in the starting XI but lacked composure in the final third.”
National media also react to Summerville display vs Liverpool
The Daily Mail were also of a similar opinion to the local one in that Summerville’s sharpness and pace was there for everyone to see.
Again, however, he could not score higher than a six due to making a mess of a chance in the first half which teams simply have to take away at Anfield.

“But looks like he could bring some much-needed excitement into what has been a dreary start to the season.”
