Report shares what Maric told Summerville before Leeds win over Liverpool at Anfield

Phil Hay has reported on The Athletic that Leeds United’s assistant manager Rene Maric told Crysencio Summerville he was going to score at Anfield against Liverpool on Saturday evening – and the young winger duly obliged.

With the scoreline reading 1-1, Leeds would have been delighted to take a point. They had to rely on Illan Meslier at times, who made some wonderful saves to deny Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino and other Liverpool players.

Rodrigo’s goal had been cancelled out by Mo Salah. But it was Leeds that had the final say. Tyler Adams’ positioning saw him cut out a Liverpool clearance – finding Willy Gnonto. The teenager’s awareness saw him keep possession.

Flicking the ball over a Liverpool defender, he was then faced with two players. But Gnonto got the cross into Patrick Bamford. A poor touch, but Summerville made it a good one – flicking the ball past Virgil van Dijk, and then Alisson.

A second in two games for Summerville, but this one will be a whole lot more important than his consolation against Fulham. Hay reports that Maric told Summerville before the game, that he would score against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“Rene Maric, Marsch’s assistant, tells Crysencio Summerville that he will score tonight. Who is there to prod in with a minute of normal time to play, only his second senior goal in England. The day before his 21st birthday?”

Hay: Leeds assistant Maric told Summerville he was going to score

After the furore, the sore heads and the joy of Saturday night dies down, focus switches to Saturday’s clash against Bournemouth. Given the Cherries have lost the last three and it is at Elland Road, Leeds should be winning.

Luis Sinisterra was one of five players Jesse Marsch said had picked up a knock. Of those five, Liam Cooper, Rodrigo and Tyler Adams all started. Joe Gelhardt was on the bench. But Sinisterra was missing from the squad.

It saw Summerville start. So, against Bournemouth, who does Marsch pick? Jack Harrison was also excellent. So, does he leave Sinisterra out – and keep Harrison and Summerville on the flanks? Hard to go against it.
