Leeds United are returning to the Premier League and already we’re seeing some new names linked with the club, some exciting and some not so.

Leeds United sealed their promotion on Easter Monday and will return to the Premier League roster for the 2025/26 season.

Daniel Farke will have plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window if he wants to establish the club in the Premier League, though.

Plenty of new signings are needed and it could quickly become costly for the club. And in a rather bizarre claim, Paul Merson has suggested Leeds United should sign Raheem Sterling.

Leeds United fans all in agreement after Paul Merson’s Raheem Sterling claim

Sterling, now 30, is currently playing at Arsenal. But it’s not going all that well for the 82-cap former England man who’s not scored and claimed just two assists in 15 Premier League games this season.

“Wouldn’t take him for free!” said one Leeds United fan in response to Merson’s claim. “Funny that” and “Oh please stop,” said others, as one fans simply said Sterling is “too old”.

Another fan posted: “So Paul Merson shows what Little he knows about Leeds United. Why on God’s earth would we want to sign Sterling? What a muppet!”

Meanwhile, fans would rather see the club sign players with more potential. One Leeds United fan posted of Sterling: “Now a journey man who we should avoid at all costs. Up and coming young talent is what we need sprinkled with a bit of experience.”

A similar comment read: “Raheem Sterling to Leeds would not be a good idea. Well past his best. If we are to succeed in the transfer market we need to find gems with potential.”

Raheem Sterling’s weekly wage at Arsenal is insane

There’s a growing feeling that Sterling is well past his past, despite being only 30 years old. He’s played a lot of football in the last several years and it seems like he’s struggling to keep up the pace in the Premier League.

So for Leeds in terms of quality, they can do a lot better than Sterling. And in terms of wages, Leeds United should stay away from Sterling at all costs.

Per Salary Sport Sterling earns an incredible £350,000-a-week at Arsenal making him the club’s highest-paid player right now.

Mikel Arteta then might be desperate to get Sterling off his books when his contract expires in May. But Sterling would surely need to take a pay cut wherever he goes.
