With Leeds United now promoted, The Whites are being touted with new signings and Paul Merson has suggested The 49ers should make an audacious move to sign Raheem Sterling.

The Whites are expected to spend big this summer in order to try and survive in the Premier League. The side needs investment in a number of areas on the pitch, with a new goalkeeper and a no.10 crucial.

This summer feels like it is going to be a big window in terms of movement and money spent, with clubs now coming to terms with Profit & Sustainability Rules. Leeds have been told to spend a nine-figure fee.

Now, Paul Merson has suggested Leeds should sign Raheem Sterling. The Euro 2020 finalist is currently on loan at Arsenal from Chelsea, but his lack of impact with The Gunners will see him return to Chelsea.

Paul Merson explains why Raheem Sterling would suit Leeds

Sterling was deemed as surplus to requirements by Enzo Maresca upon the Italian’s arrival at Stamford Bridge from Leicester City. Sterling has struggled to replicate his Manchester City form since his exit.

The England star and four-time Premier League winner is now set to return to Chelsea, where he is on a massive £350,000-a-week contract. Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson has suggested Leeds sign Sterling.

“He needs to go and play football, week in, week out to get some rhythm. He’s come in games where they’ve made changes and it’s not fluent. I feel for him. His time at Arsenal is up, definitely,” he said.

“If I was at Leeds, I would look at Raheem. He has experience, they’re a young team he’s very good in the dressing room, a good team player. Wouldn’t be a bad move for Leeds, or Sterling. That ticks the box.”

Raheem Sterling would be huge, but do Leeds really need him?

Dan James has been nominated for the Chamionship Player of the Season award and Neil Warnock is excited to see James in the Premier League, after being reborn under the stewardship of Daniel Farke.

Leeds of course, need experience and probably, some big-name signings to excite the Elland Road fans. But replacing arguably Leeds’ best player with Sterling, who is past his peak, doesn’t make much sense.

Sterling and James’ league form compared over last two seasons:

Of course, if Sterling can get back to anywhere near his best then he immediately proves Leeds. But it seems a big if and given he would be an expensive signing, surely Leeds can find better value for money.
