Leeds United star Dan James battling two Elland Road transfer targets in race for Championship POTS award

It will come as little surprise to Leeds United fans that Dan James has been nominated for the Player of the Season award ahead of May’s award ceremony – but faces competition from two others.

There are a handful of Leeds players that may feel slightly hard done by, Joe Rodon has been exceptional and consistent, Jayden Bogle a bargain at £5m. Ao Tanaka is even better value for money at just £3.4m.

But James has taken his tally to 21 goals and assists this season after scoring against both Luton and then the winner at Middlesbrough before picking up an injury. Stuart Dallas thinks James has been Leeds’ best.

Daniel Farke has been nominated alongside three other gaffers for the Manager of the Season award, in Chris Wilder, Scott Parker and Regis Le Bris. The EFL have only nominated three Championship players.

James Trafford could make history with POTS triumph

Since the award became a thing in 2006 and Phil Jagielka was handed the title, no goalkeeper has ever won the Championship Player of the Season award. But James Trafford now has the chance to do so.

Many would regard the England international as favourite, having conceded just 13 goals in 41 games for Parker’s second-placed side. A whopping 28 clean sheets, never actually conceding more than one goal.

Leeds have been linked with a move for Trafford if The Whites are promoted and Burnley fail to go up, but the chances are Trafford will join Newcastle United – and help Leeds to strike a move for Nick Pope.

Third name on EFL shortlist subject of £13m Leeds bid in 2024

Surprisingly, Gustavo Hamer is the third name on the EFL shortlist. There is no denying the Brazil-born star’s talent – but for large parts of the season, Hamer has not been a regular starter for Wilder’s men.

Only completing 18 of his 38 Championship appearances, Hamer has still clocked up 14 goals and assists. The playmaker has largely orchestrated The Blades’ attack when in the side, a player Leeds have wanted.

Last summer, Leeds bid £13m for Hamer but it was rejected – after Leeds had bought Bogle from The Blades. Leeds have also been linked with going back in for Hamer, but promotion is likely to be crucial.
