‘Forced to wait’… Leeds United could now face anxious wait over signing 26-year-old player

Joe Rodon is quickly becoming a fan favourite at Elland Road and every Leeds United fan will want the star signed permanently – but Football London’s Alasdair Gold explains why it could be difficult.

Rodon, 26, has starred at the back for Leeds. Clocking up his 25th outing for the club on Saturday, he has helped keep 10 clean sheets. The Wales star continues to be a rock at the back as others change.

Charlie Cresswell is struggling to get into the side despite injuries to Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk, as Rodon continued to play with a new partner each week. But still, the former Swansea star still shines.

Reports state that Spurs are open to Rodon’s exit, and that a fee of £20m is required to land the star. Whether or not Leeds are willing to meet Tottenham’s demands now, remains to be seen this month.

Leeds may of course pursue a smaller fee for Rodon given that come the summer, his contract with Tottenham will enter its final 12 months. Gold explains why Leeds may find obstacles in a deal for him.

“Leeds fans are desperate for their club to sign the 26-year-old permanently but there was no option in their original loan agreement to do so. That means the Yorkshire club will have to negotiate with Spurs.

“His form this season will only have increased his value and the interest. There has been talk that Leeds may attempt an early deal this month because in the summer there may be a transfer tussle,” Gold says.

“Leeds may be forced to wait until they know whether they will be back in the Premier League with the financial boost that brings, which could allow others a shot at signing the Welshman in the summer.”

As Gold says, Leeds will surely be doing everything within our power of striking a deal that sees Rodon remain at Elland Road beyond the summer. But, it may hinge on promotion to the Premier League.

Rodon has been asked if he is going to sign for Leeds permanently and he replied by simply saying it is something he is unable to answer, now. It is going to be a long and perhaps painful wait, until a decision.
