‘Different to us’… Mark Robins makes Leeds promotion claim after Coventry’s 3-0 defeat at Elland Road

Coventry City manager Mark Robins has shared his verdict on Leeds United after his side’s 3-0 defeat at Elland Road.

The Sky Blues were one of just four teams who were unbeaten against Daniel Farke‘s side last season but failed to lay a single glove on Leeds in this meeting.

Leeds were dominant right from the first whistle and opened the scoring when star man Wilfried Gnonto powered home a perfect cut-back from Junior Firpo.

Ethan Ampadu’s injury had threatened to knock Leeds out of their stride but thankfully his replacement Ao Tanaka produced an excellent display in his first real appearance since joining in the summer.

Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe were then able to round off the scoring in the second half to mark Leeds’ most comfortable victory of the season so far.

Robins shares immediate Leeds promotion verdict

Despite Coventry’s slow start to the campaign, it is somewhat of a surprise Leeds have been able to sweep them aside so comfortably after last season’s meetings.

Robins suggested Leeds had replaced their outgoing players well in the summer but without Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray, it is going to take time for Farke’s side to hit their stride.

However, Leeds had no such issues finding joy against Coventry in comparison to last season, and in his post-match press conference, Robins was asked to give his verdict.

While quickly wanting to make the point that Leeds are in a completely ‘different’ position to his side, he did tip them to be ‘there or thereabouts’ in the promotion reckoning.

He said: “The fans expect them to kick on and go up. Leeds are different to us. Premier League a few years ago and just missed out last season. It’s been 20 years for us.

“Leeds have sold over £100m worth of talent this summer and replaced them with good quality as well. Every club is similar in what they try to do with young players and developing them. Leeds have top players and should be there or thereabouts.”

Leeds signings starting to make an impact

Robins has mentioned in both press conferences how much money Leeds raised through player sales in the summer, but that doesn’t equal overnight success.

Leeds spent a fraction of the amount that was brought in on replacements, some of which on players who have never played in English football.

Bogle is of course an exception to that, and after a shaky start, produced his best display in a white shirt since joining from Sheffield United.

Largie Ramazani and Tanaka, meanwhile, have been given more time to settle in, with both showing exactly why they were bought this afternoon.
