What Leeds loanee Darko Gyabi did in Plymouth’s win over Luton that left local media very impressed

Leeds United loanee Darko Gyabi played a key role in Plymouth Argyle’s impressive 3-1 win over Luton Town in the Championship.

Argyle were able to pick up their second win of the season under new boss Wayne Rooney with Gyabi getting another 71 minutes of senior football under his belt.

After a difficult start to the season, things seem to be clicking for Rooney in Devon. With that, has already seen some big improvements from Elland Road youngster Gyabi, who was criticised a tad by Plymouth’s local press during his first spell.

Plymouth assistant manager Pete Shuttleworth recently suggested Gyabi could become one of the Championship‘s top players if he can find a level of consistency in his game.

And it appears as though he is starting to do that and show exactly why Leeds splashed £5 million to sign him from Manchester City over two years ago.

Leeds loanee Gyabi praised after Plymouth win over Luton

As mentioned, Plymouth ran out 3-1 winners on the night with Gyabi playing a significant portion of the match, until going off with an injury after 71 minutes.

Rami Al Hajj and Ibrahim Cissoko (2) were the men who got on the scoresheet for Rooney’s side, with Gyabi providing the assist for the latter’s first goal of the game.

Gyabi picked up the ball practically on the edge of his own box and drove his way into the Luton half. He then found Cissoko on the left-hand-side, who was able to finish.

The 20-year-old was praised heavily by Plymouth Live for the role he played in Argyle’s all important second goal.

They wrote: “Darko Gyabi 7 – Had a couple of misplaced passes which Luton did not capitalise on but otherwise this performance from Gyabi continued the recent trend of improvement from him.

“He made a surging lung-busting break from the edge of Argyle’s penalty area in the build-up to them taking a 2-0 lead before passing the ball to his left to Ibrahim Cissoko, who did the rest of the work.

“Gyabi was down on the ground when Luton replied almost immediately due to a dead leg and he was replaced by Jordan Houghton before play restarted.”

What chance does Gyabi have of making it at Leeds?

Gyabi is definitely showing all the right things at Plymouth but he still has a long way to go until he is likely to come into Daniel Farke‘s reckoning.

He is currently behind Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell and potentially even Charlie Crew when it comes to a place in Leeds’ midfield.

If Leeds were to get promoted, it would certainly all but end his hopes of making it at Elland Road. However, if that didn’t happen, he would have a huge chance.

Ampadu is someone likely to attract Premier League interest, while Rothwell’s loan from Bournemouth will have ended, potentially leaving the door open. He just needs to continue developing as he is.
