Daniel Farke now faces huge call over whether 20-year-old starts for Leeds against Leicester

After a very quiet first few months of the season, Willy Gnonto has reminded all of us just how dangerous he can be, with five goals in his last five games for Leeds United in all competitions.

Crucially, the Italian has broken the deadlock in three of those games, including in Saturday’s clash with Plymouth Argyle. The 20-year-old did superbly to latch onto a Georginio Rutter long ball to find the bottom corner.

Willy Gnonto‘s return to form came at the perfect time for Leeds. Daniel James had been superb this season before sustaining an injury in the win over Norwich City in January.

James has not started since then. So Gnonto has had a chance to stake a claim. And he has most definitely taken his opportunity with both hands.

With that, Gnonto has given Daniel Farke a huge dilemma ahead of Friday’s monumental game against Leicester City at Elland Road.

Only Crysencio Summerville and Joel Piroe have scored more league goals than James this season. And James has a knack of flying out of the blocks for Leeds. A fast start on Friday could be huge.

Both wingers have strong claim to start against Leicester

Farke will also be wary of asking too much of Archie Gray. Gray has been outstanding at right-back for much of this season. But he has found life tougher against a couple of the division’s best wingers. And it looks as though Stephy Mavididi may be his opponent when the Foxes come to town.

Like James, Mavididi has 10 league goals this season. So Gray is definitely going to be tested. And it is arguably James who will give him more support.

But dropping Gnonto would be a massive call from Farke.

Unless there are injuries, most Leeds fans would feel fairly confident about naming the majority of the side Farke will pick against Enzo Maresca’s men.

But perhaps that right wing spot is one area with a question mark hanging over it. Gnonto deserves credit for making that the case since returning to the fold.
