Four tackles, three interceptions: Leeds player’s brilliant display at Plymouth cannot go under the radar

On a day where Leeds United had to scrap for three points, Archie Gray had another outstanding afternoon at right-back.

The Whites put themselves back into the top two in the Championship. Goals in either half from Willy Gnonto and Georginio Rutter saw Daniel Farke’s side overcome Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

At times, Leeds were brilliant. But in many respects, the most impressive aspect of the visitors’ performance was how they found a way even when Plymouth were threatening to ask questions.

Archie Gray impresses for Leeds yet again

Plymouth are one of the top goalscorers at home in the Championship this season. And yet, Illan Meslier was not given a huge amount to do on Saturday.

Joe Rodon once again appeared to be in the right place time and time again. And Ethan Ampadu looks as though he would still find a way to comfortably pass out of the back even if he was completely surrounded.

But one display which should arguably not go under the radar is that of Archie Gray. The 17-year-old continues to delay Connor Roberts‘ run in the starting lineup.

Farke praised Gray’s form ahead of Saturday. And he lived up to expectations against the Pilgrims.

Gray won four tackles, more than any other player on the pitch, according to Whoscored. And it was a similar story with his three interceptions.

Youngster doing all he can to keep place for season-defining game

It remains remarkable to see how well Gray is playing away from his favoured role. Leeds now have an international right-back waiting in the wings. And yet, on current form, there is absolutely no reason to leave Gray out of the team.

It is impossible to have a conversation about Gray and not mention that he is still only 17. But that is because so many of us remain staggered by how well he is doing.

It would be a huge call to keep Gray at right-back for Friday’s clash with Leicester City at Elland Road. But it is fair to say that the academy graduate has done all he can to keep his place.
